چکیده

When asked to list semantic features for concrete concepts, participants list many features for some concepts and few for others. Concepts with many semantic features have been reported to be processed faster in lexical decision, naming, and semantic decision tasks (Pexman, Holyk, & Monfils, 2003; Pexman, Lupker, & Hino, 2002). Using a much larger and better controlled set of items in Experiment 1, we replicated the number-of-features (NoF) effect in both lexical and semantic decision. We then investigated the relationship between NoF and feature type (shared vs. distinctive). Shared features are those which appear in many concepts () whereas distinctive features appear in few concepts (). Keeping total NoF constant, decision latencies were shorter for concepts with many shared features versus those with few shared features in lexical and semantic decision, with a larger difference obtaining in semantic decision (Experiment 2). Manipulating shared or distinctive features to create low versus high levels of NoF revealed a much larger NoF advantage for concepts with many shared features than for those with many distinctive features (Experiment 3). It is concluded that shared features play a dominant role in the NoF effect.

The Effect of Variations in Integrated Writing Tasks and Proficiency Level on Features of Written Discourse Generated by Iranian EFL Learners

In recent years, a number of large-scale writing assessments (e.g., TOEFL iBT) have employed integrated writing tests to measure test takers’ academic writing ability. Using a quantitative method, the current study examined how written textual features and use of source material(s) varied across two types of text-based integrated writing tasks (i.e., listening-to-write vs. reading-to-write) and...

The effect of simulated dust storm on wood development and leaf stomata in Quercus brantii L

Dust storms are increasingly threatening the forest ecosystem in Western Iran. Due to its coverage of vast area of Zagros forest, the Quercus brantii is at the front line of the attack. Investigating the Effect of Saline Water Treatments and Some Organic Fertilizers on lemongrass' (Cymbopogon citratus) Physiological Features and Growth

Introduction: Salinity is a basic non-living environmental factor that reduces the yield worldwide. In arid and semi-arid regions, the salinity of water and soil limits crop production. Therefore, it is crucially important to assess the salinity tolerance of medicinal herbs if they are to be cultivated in saline areas. Materials and Methods: To investigate the effect of water salinity and so...
